Victoria Miro: Yayoi Kusama

Just spectacular. In 2012 I saw Infinity Mirrored Room at the Tate and was so captivated by the dazzling lights and the sensation of standing among the stars that I thought Kusama could not become anymore enthralling. Although my heart did not fly to the universe when I stood among the pumpkins at the Victoria Miro, I was filled with a sense of great warmth from the glow that surrounded me. The dazzling yellow light that illuminated the infinity mirror was more intimate than the entirety of space; and the small space wrapped around me like a golden cocoon. I was captivated. A minute was not enough to spend in eternity. The eternity too bast to contemplate in one minute.

I enjoyed the rest of the downstairs exhibition with its dazzling crystal chandelier, ever changing dappled light room, floating silver orbs and the big golden pumpkin. After climbing the infinity stairs to reach the second floor near the end of the exhibition I was not as enamoured with Kusama’s paintings. They seemed to get lost in the ginormous space. But perhaps that is just my prejudice towards preferring installations. And besides, the rest of the exhibition was more than enough to chew over. Highly recommended exhibition.
